Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Commercial Manager to lead all commercial activities for a gold mining project currently in the construction phase and transitioning into full operations. This is a senior, strategic role responsible for managing commercial strategy, contracts, negotiations, vendor relationships, and commercial governance across the project lifecycle.

The Commercial Manager will play a critical role in shaping the commercial framework of the project, ensuring value optimisation, commercial integrity, and strong risk management. The position requires deep expertise in gold mining, strong negotiation capabilities, and a proven ability to partner with both technical and executive stakeholders. The role is based in Jakarta and reports directly to the Director, Commercial & Strategy.


Key Responsibilities

1. Commercial Leadership

  • Lead the end-to-end commercial function for the project from construction into steady-state operations.
  • Develop and implement commercial strategies, policies, and frameworks that maximise value, mitigate risk, and support long-term business objectives.
  • Serve as a senior advisor to the Director on all commercial matters.

2. Contracting & Procurement Strategy

  • Oversee major construction and operational contracts including EPC, mining services, logistics, major equipment, and long-term supply agreements.
  • Lead contract strategy development, tendering, evaluation, award, and post-award contract management.
  • Ensure that all commercial commitments align with corporate governance and risk policies.

3. Commercial Negotiations

  • Act as the primary negotiator for high-value, complex commercial agreements.
  • Engage directly with mining contractors, EPC partners, suppliers, and strategic vendors to secure favourable commercial outcomes.
  • Lead claim resolution, variation negotiations, and dispute management in collaboration with legal and technical teams.

4. Vendor & Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with key partners, contractors, government stakeholders, and internal project teams.
  • Maintain oversight of vendor performance throughout construction and operations.
  • Ensure alignment of commercial terms with safety, quality, and operational readiness requirements.

5. Financial & Commercial Risk Management

  • Identify commercial risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee commercial inputs into budgeting, forecasting, cost analysis, and business cases.
  • Support investment decisions and economic evaluations for project expansion or optimisation opportunities.

6. Transition from Construction to Operations

  • Ensure commercial continuity and compliance as the project moves into commissioning and operations.
  • Align operational contracts, pricing structures, and service agreements with long-term production targets.
  • Drive continuous improvement across procurement, commercial governance, and contract performance management.

Requirements

Mandatory

  • Gold mining experience (minimum 8–10 years), with direct exposure to construction AND operational phases.
  • Strong background in commercial management, with proven experience leading negotiations for complex mining or heavy-industry contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience working within international mining organisations in Indonesia.
  • Excellent commercial judgement, stakeholder management, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work in Jakarta with regular travel to site as required.
  • Fluency in English; Bahasa Indonesia proficiency is an advantage.

Preferred

  • Experience with EPC/EPCM frameworks, mining services contracts, and operations supply agreements.
  • Strong understanding of Indonesian mining regulations, permitting frameworks, and local-content requirements.
  • Exposure to risk management, financial modelling, or commercial strategy.
  • Leadership experience within a project transitioning to operations.
